An ice fishing trip mid-January to Lake Wawasee resulted in an unusual find by Anton and Alex Babich, Fort Wayne. That find, which was video taped, has gone viral with calls being received from the United Kingdom and Australia.
Publicity of the find has also made it on local television, National Geographic, Outdoors Radio Talk Show, the Weather Channel and The Outdoor German Magazine to name a few.
It was Sunday, Jan. 15, when the Babich brothers came up to ice fish on the “north channel” of Lake Wawasee. That location was actually near Constitution Drive in the Kanata Manayunk and Country Club Acres additions, off Johnson’s Bay.
Anton Babich stated his brother had visited individuals in that area and on this particular fishing trip, parked off the channel.
“As we were getting set up and setting our tip-ups, my brother spotted a fish frozen in the ice,” said Anton Babich. Investigation found another fish with it: a pike eating a bass. Anton Babich stated the strange weather at that time had made the ice clear and even though it was 10-inches thick, you could see through it.”
After taking a photograph of the rare and unusual find, it was posted on Facebook. They later went back and took a video of what they found. The video shows Alex Babich using a chain saw to cut a block of ice from the lake that held the pike and bass. It can be seen on YouTube at youtu.be/_ZB6RW4Dg1M.
Anton Babich stated the original photo received 16,000 shares and 4,000 likes. But the feedback stating it was fake was such they went back and filmed their find. To their surprise it was still there. The video was posted Jan. 19, since that time they have received a random number of messages with eight to 10 representatives from companies wanting to license the video. The video has since been licensed.
As of Thursday, Feb. 9, the video has had 700,937 views with 698 likes on YouTube. The Facebook post has had more than 60 million views.
