ACQUATIC ECOLOGY LESSON — Kosciusko Leadership Academy met at the Wawasee Area Conservancy Foundation recently to learn about aquatic ecology in Kosciusko County. Dr. Nathan Bosch, associate professor of environmental science and executive director of Kosciusko Lakes and Streams, said there are 114 lakes in Kosciusko County, including those with two or more acres. There are 106 lakes of five or more acres. Kosciusko County is home to both the largest natural lake (Lake Wawasee) and the deepest lake in Indiana (Tippecanoe Lake). Ninety-seven of the lakes are named and can be found listed online at www.water.grace.edu.
Heather Harwood, executive director of WACF, spoke to KLA cadets about WACF’s role in protecting the watershed. Acquisitions of land for wetlands and lakefront property have been made. WACF has completed ditch projects and accepted grant applications for funding. Diana Castell, volunteer educator for WACF, offers residents education on protecting the watershed.
