Kim Conrad, 61, and her 32-year-old son, Stephen T. Conrad II, lost their lives in a virtually head-on crash. The retired elementary school teacher and professional golfer were pronounced deceased at the scene by Kosciusko County Coroner Tony Ciriello. Both were passengers in a vehicle driven by Steven Conrad, 67, husband and father.
Steve Conrad was taken to Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne. It is reported he suffered injuries to the ribs and back. Initially listed in serious condition, he has been upgraded to fair condition.
Mickgomery W. Hisey, 26, Syracuse, driver of the other vehicle, suffered multiple injuries. He was taken to Parkview Regional Medical Center, Fort Wayne. Initially in critical condition, he has been upgraded to serious condition according to hospital officials. His passenger, Brody Jordan, 23, Syracuse, who suffered head and neck injuries, was taken to Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne. Initially in serious condition, he has been upgraded to fair condition.
Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department deputies, along with Syracuse Police, Turkey Creek Fire and Paramedics were called at approximately 6:13 p.m. to Crazy Corners — CR 1200N and Syracuse-Webster Road — following a report of a two-vehicle crash. Responders found two vehicles that had struck virtually head-on.
Investigators have preliminarily determined a 2015 Chrysler, driven by Hisey, had allegedly been attempting to “drag race” in the wrong lane of traffic prior to the collision. Deputies stated, according to witness statements, Hisey had begun passing another vehicle westbound on a crest of a hill just prior to the intersection. Hisey’s vehicle entered into the intersection, hitting the 2016 Pontiac, driven by Steve Conrad.
Turkey Creek Fire Territory used extrication equipment to free Steve Conrad, Hisey and Jordan from their vehicles.
The accident remains under investigation by the Kosciusko County Fatal Team reconstruction members.
